Medical Office Specialist Apprenticeship Program

Program Overview

The Medical Office Specialist Apprenticeship Program prepares students to perform front office or business support functions in a health care setting. Students follow curriculum that is intended to meet the medical administrative competencies developed by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and take the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam through the National Healthcareer Association.   

A variety of job titles exists for the position of Medical Office Specialist, including but not limited to: 

  • Medical administrative assistant 
  • Medical receptionist  
  • Medical secretary 
  • Front office assistant  
  • Patient access representative  
  • Patient services coordinator 
  • Patient registration specialist

About our Program

  • Registered apprenticeship program through the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Apprenticeship.  
  • Administered through the Washington Association for Community Health.  
  • Results in a CMAA License through NHA.  
  • Online coursework is overseen by an expert instructor. 

Scope of work includes the following skill sets: 

    • Communication & Professionalism 
    • Appointment Scheduling 
    • Medical Law, Ethics, & Compliance  
    • Patient Encounters  
    • Billing & Revenue Cycle  
    • Administrative Procedures & Logistics  

    Apprenticeship Expectations

    • Work full-time as a Medical Office Specialist to learn all required skills while on-the-job.  
    • Complete 145 hours of online supplemental coursework (unpaid, asynchronous, virtual curriculum).  
    • Track and report skill practices as required to demonstrate competency.  
    • Study for and take the NHA CMAA Exam.  
    • Follow all employer and program policies and procedures.  
    • Must be at least 18 years old and hold a GED-level of education or higher.
